Dodge revives, redesigns Durango

The Dodge Durango is back on the market, reborn for 2011 as a midsize crossover utility vehicle, based on the architecture of the redesigned 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

But the new Durango, like its predecessor, has a third row of seating, while the Grand Cherokee has just two rows. That gives the Durango a capacity of seven passengers, compared with five for the Grand Cherokee.

And that makes it more desirable for lots of consumers — including me — who like the idea of having that third seat available when it's needed. On my recent weeklong test of the Durango, the extra capacity came in handy for a long trip, during which we needed room for six people and their luggage.

The Durango has its own distinctive styling, different from the Grand Cherokee, inside and out. It has the new Dodge crosshair grille, instantly putting it in the Dodge family of vehicles.

It's quite comfortable, although as with most vehicles in this class, the third row is best suited for children. Up front, though, the seats were fine for a long highway drive; in the middle row, even the adults had plenty of knee- and legroom.

The new model revived the Durango line, which was dropped after the 2009 model year in response to poor SUV sales due to 2008's high gasoline prices.

Originally, the Durango was a traditional body-on-frame, truck-based sport utility; the new model has unibody construction — no frame underneath as body and frame are integrated in a single unit.

Having the new Durango in the Dodge lineup was a surprise. There were reports that as Chrysler reinvented itself after bankruptcy, the Dodge brand would return with only minivans and performance cars such as the Charger and Challenger.

Jeep was believed to be the brand that would have the company's only sport utility vehicles; and Chrysler was said to be the brand for cars and minivans. The Dodge pickups, meanwhile, were renamed “Ram.”

But the Durango is back, and it's one of three crossovers in the Dodge lineup. The others are the five-passenger compact Nitro and five- or seven-passenger midsize Journey. (The Nitro is built on the architecture of the Jeep Liberty, while the Journey is derived from the Dodge Avenger sedan.)

The first generation of the Durango arrived for 1998, which was its best sales year ever, with nearly 190,000 sold. It was redesigned on the new Dakota midsize pickup chassis for 2004 and received a partial makeover for 2007 while remaining on the same chassis. In its last year, 2009, only about 33,500 were sold.

Prices for the redesigned 2011 Durango ranged from $29,195 to $44,020 (plus $850 freight), but for 2012, consumers get a small break — the new range is $28,995 to $42,995.

Five versions were in the 2011 lineup: the base Express; midlevel Heat, Crew and R/T models; and the top-of-the-line Citadel. For 2012, though, there are only four trims. The base model is now the SXT, and the Heat model has been discontinued.

For this report, our tester was the 2011 Crew rear-wheel-drive model, with a base price of $33,420.

Under the hood of the Durango is either a V-6 or V-8 engine, and it has rear- or all-wheel drive. The base engine is the same 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 from the Grand Cherokee, rated at 290 horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque. It has a Mercedes-Benz-derived five-speed automatic transmission,

EPA ratings are 16 mpg city/23 highway for the V-6 rear- and all-wheel-drive models for 2012; the 2011 model was rated at 16/22 with all-wheel drive. The two-wheel drive V-6 has a range of more than 500 miles on a tank of gasoline.

Available is the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 from the Grand Cherokee, with 360 horsepower and 390 foot-pounds of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. It has a fuel-saving system that cuts it down to four cylinders during highway cruising.

Fuel-economy ratings for the V-8 are 14 city/20 highway with rear-wheel drive and 13/20 with all-wheel drive.

2012 Dodge Charger Pursuit Raises The Bar For Law Enforcement

2012-charger-cop-image-e1317046635697

The new 2012 Dodge Charger V6 and V8 models set new levels of performance at Michigan State Police’s (MSP) annual Police Vehicle Evaluation tests. The Charger emerged from these tests with the fastest lap time ever recorded at this event, 1:33.7.

The Dodge Charger Pursuit is available with two potent engines, including a 370 horsepower V8 and a 292 horsepower V6. Both units are capable of delivering rapid acceleration, which is perfect for quickly catching up to target vehicles.

“Achieving the fastest-ever lap time at the Michigan State Police’s annual Police Vehicle Evaluation test reflects the mission of the Dodge Charger Pursuit Team to equip our law enforcement officials with the absolute best combination of vehicle performance and tactical equipment,” said Peter Grady, Vice President of Network Development and Fleet, Chrysler Group LLC. “Even more impressive is that all four Michigan State Police Vehicle Test Team drivers averaged their fastest times in the Charger Pursuit – reinforcing the driver confidence provided when world-class acceleration, braking, handling and dynamics are combined.”

According to Chrysler, the 2012 Dodge Charger Pursuit provides law-enforcement with the best combination of tactical technology, safety, power, efficiency and an iconic design. Recent tests by the MSP show that Charger Pursuit is indeed a formidable vehicle for law enforcement agencies. In addition to acceleration times, the vehicle was noted for its superior ride and handling.

Safety for law enforcement professionals is also assured in the Charger Pursuit, as it was named a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Outfitting Your Jeep® 101: Bumpers

Posted on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 10:00 am by Alan and Jackie Ellis in Models

In a previous blog, we talked about the most popular modification to your Jeep® brand vehicle – tires and wheels.  The second most popular modification is probably a change to your vehicle’s bumper. While the standard equipment bumpers on the all-new 2011 Jeep models are sufficient for most everyone’s off-roading needs, some Jeep 4×4 enthusiasts have a practical need for a specialized bumper – or maybe they just want a different look for their Jeep brand vehicle.  Regardless of the reason, aftermarket bumpers from Mopar® can be both practical and aesthetically pleasing, and can be installed on almost every Jeep Wrangler.

Why do people want to change the bumper on their Jeep brand vehicle?  While the main purpose of a bumper is protection of the engine, grill, and front of the vehicle, a change to the front or the rear bumper can greatly modify the entire look of your Jeep 4×4.  The front bumper helps with protection, but you can also get front bumpers that have additional tow hooks/rings, winch mounts, light mounts, and brush guards.  On extremely modified rigs, bumpers are much narrower for rock crawling; plus, some designs provide the vehicle with increased approach angles.  Rear bumpers are just as important as front bumpers, but for different reasons.  They can help protect the vehicle from damage and include integrated hitch mounts, while providing a platform for mounting a swing-away rack for oversized tires.

One popular style of aftermarket bumpers are tube bumpers.  Tube bumpers have been very popular for years on older Jeep Wranglers and are available to fit both the front and rear of the vehicle.  Although a tube bumper is primarily added to change the style and look, most people try to find practicality in their new bumper by adding one that serves multiple purposes.

Most bumpers are fairly easy to install, but some may require special tools or modifications, which require professional installation.  Either way, changing bumpers on your Jeep 4×4 is a great way to enhance the look or to increase the off-road ability of an already-capable Jeep brand vehicle.  Mopar offers a huge variety of bumpers to fit most models, so check out the specific accessories suggested in this article by visiting http://www.facebook.com/mopar or http://www.twitter.com/officialMOPAR. ; While there, ask a Mopar Specialist about the great selection of bumpers we offer for most Jeep Wrangler vehicles.

A ’79 CJ Brought Andy Goodall to the Jeep® Brand

79cj-andy-goodall1

There’s always something special about your first vehicle.  For most people, it opens up a new world of freedom that serves as the welcome party for a new chapter in your life.  That’s especially true with Australian Andy Goodall.  His first vehicle was a ’79 CJ that he still has to this day.

“Back in the early 90’s I was going to buy my first car. All I wanted was a Jeep [4x4], so I saved and saved and saved.  Jeep® [vehicles] were scarce, but I eventually found a golden brown 79 model.  When I first saw it, the owner had taken it away to be cleaned and forgot to latch the bonnet back on.  It flew up and bent itself over the windscreen, so that was how I first saw it.  He fixed it, I bought it and haven’t had the heart to sell it since then.”

But that was just the beginning.

“I got a fiancé and she wanted to buy a new car, so we looked at a lot of boring sensible unfun cars. She said “What do you want?” and I answered, “Another Jeep.” So we got a TJ 2006 model. It didn’t come with half doors, so I imported them to Australia and had them sprayed. They look great. I no longer have the fiancé but I’ve still got the two Jeeps.”

What can we say, Andy? Jeep brand love is forever.

Chrysler Brand’s 2011 Super Bowl Commercial ‘Born of Fire’ Wins Creative Arts Emmy Award

  • Awarded Emmy for 'Outstanding Commercial'
September 11, 2011 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences awarded the 2010-2011 Creative Arts Primetime Emmy Awards for programs and individual achievements at the 63rd Emmy Awards presentation. An Emmy was awarded to the Chrysler brand’s 2011 Super Bowl commercial "Born of Fire." The awards took place on Saturday, Sept 10 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

“The Chrysler Brand is thrilled to win a Creative Arts Emmy Award for our Super Bowl commercial, ‘Born of Fire,’” said Olivier Francois, Chief Marketing Officer, Chrysler Group LLC. “Born of Fire was more than a commercial about the Chrysler 200, it was our anthem and signified the return of the Chrysler Brand and our Company. We are honored to be given this award and would like to share it with the wonderful people of Detroit who served as our inspiration and, of course, the hard-working employees of Chrysler Group LLC.”

Born of Fire debuted at the 2011 Super Bowl and was designed to generate a conversation about the Chrysler brand and the 2011 Chrysler 200. The two-minute commercial, which was also a Super Bowl first, ignited a spark throughout the United States, as many felt a connection to the attitude and work ethic portrayed in the scenes and narration. The spot reflects where the brand is headed and pays tribute to its industrial roots. While the commercial focused on Detroit, in many ways, it encapsulated the spirit of the country and the comeback of the Chrysler brand and Chrysler Group.

The Chrysler brand chose internationally known Detroiter, Eminem and his song “Lose Yourself” because the lyrics speak to the ability to do anything we set our mind to and that failure is not an option. The Chrysler brand, the company and its employees have adopted the principle that failure is not an option.

Born of Fire also revealed the tagline for the brand, “Imported from Detroit,” created to convey the message that one does not have to cross an ocean to obtain luxury – it's available right here and evident in the Chrysler brand product lineup.

The Chrysler brand introduced “Imported from Detroit” merchandise on the brand’s website (http://www.chrysler.com). The collection features an array of products with the “Imported from Detroit” logo which represents the hardworking spirit captured and celebrated in the Chrysler brand’s Super Bowl commercial. In keeping with the spirit in which the logo was created, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of “Imported from Detroit” merchandise found on www.Chrysler.com will go to four Detroit-area charities.

Charities are as follows:

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan – http://www.bgcsm.org

With the new Durango, you get S.U.V. prowess for off-roading and towing without paying a significant penalty in on-road drivability or fuel economy.

Benefits of Some Benz Beneath the Skin

TESTED 2011 Dodge Durango Crew

WHAT IS IT? An American relative of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class sport utility.

HOW MUCH? $30,045 for base Express; Crew as tested was $43,385 including $1,195 Technology Group (adaptive speed control, forward collision warning and rear cross-path detection) and $5,000 Preferred Package (20-inch wheels, navigation system, leather and heated front and second-row seats).

WHAT’S UNDER THE HOOD? 3.6-liter V-6 (290 horsepower, 260 pound-feet); 5-speed automatic; all-wheel drive.

IS IT THIRSTY? Rating for 2011 is 16 m.p.g. city, 22 highway. For 2012, the addition of electric power steering lifts the highway figure to 23 m.p.g.

I’LL go out on a limb and wager that most people who buy three-row S.U.V.’s and crossovers neither know nor care what’s under the skin. That’s fine — who but a car geek cares what lurks beneath a Ford Explorer?

But nearly all of these vehicles are built on shared platforms, and that incurs compromises. Crossovers are typically based on front-drive cars with limited towing and off-road abilities. Body-on-frame S.U.V.’s are based on pickups, and they (including the original Durango) drive and swill fuel like trucks.

The latest Durango, though, is based on neither a car nor a pickup. Thanks to Chrysler’s bygone hookup with Mercedes-Benz, the Durango (as well as the Jeep Grand Cherokee) shares DNA with the Mercedes GL, a classier fancier relative than a Taurus or a Silverado.

Like the $60,000-plus GL, the Durango uses a rear-drive unibody platform with independent suspensions front and rear. This seems the best of both worlds. You get S.U.V. prowess for off-roading and towing without paying a significant penalty in on-road drivability or fuel economy. In fact, a rear-drive V-6 Durango can tow slightly more than a Chevy Tahoe Hybrid while matching its highway mileage rating.

The Durango’s new V-6 puts out a healthy 290 horsepower, but Dodge also offers a 360-horsepower Hemi V-8 that uses a cylinder-deactivation system to run on 4 cylinders under light loads. Most of these deactivation systems seem to work if you’re only heading downhill with a tailwind under a waning moon, but it’s easy to coax the Durango into fuel-miser mode at moderate speeds. On a highway trip during an earlier test of the V-8 Durango, I got 22 m.p.g., which equaled the rating for the V-6 with all-wheel drive.

In corners, the Durango feels more like a crossover than a truck. Its front-to-rear weight distribution is 50-50, with some trim levels even tipping toward a slight rear weight bias. BMW makes a big deal of its cars’ 50-50 balance, so it’s impressive to see a Dodge S.U.V. achieve that handling-friendly balance.

In stark contrast to its rude predecessor, the new Durango looks like a member of a higher price bracket. The interior, in particular, is emblematic of Chrysler’s newfound willingness (and for that matter, ability) to invest money where you can see it. You might expect heated leather rear seats and adaptive cruise control in a Lexus, but their availability in a Dodge is a nice surprise.

Regardless of its upscale intentions, this is still a beast of burden, and Chrysler says the Durango can carry enough 10-foot 2-by-4s to build a treehouse. This seems like a strange metric for cargo capacity — I mean, how big is the treehouse? — but I like it. If I owned a Durango, I would often boast of its treehouse capacity (one).

And, in contrast to the herd of crossovers, the Durango is still a real S.U.V. During my test drive, a huge storm struck my neighborhood, flooding the main road. The scene was straight out of an S.U.V. commercial: a line of cars trapped at water’s edge while a tow truck on the opposite side winched out a Cadillac SRX that didn’t make it across. I pulled to the front of the line, gauged the depth and plunged in. No problem.

While the Durango starts around $30,000, options can hoist the price beyond $47,000. Even at that level, the Durango strikes me as a reasonable value. Don’t think of it as an expensive Dodge; think of it as an inexpensive Mercedes.

2011-09-01_1337

September 1, 2011 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The Jeep® brand and Activision Publishing, Inc. today announced that Jeep has been named exclusive automotive partner of Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare 3®, the year’s most anticipated entertainment launch, which will be released on November 8. This marks a second chapter in a joint promotion that Jeep and Activision began last year.

As part of these efforts, Jeep also announced that it will produce the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Call of Duty: MW3 Special Edition. Available in Jeep showrooms this November, the new limited-edition Jeep Wrangler will be available in both two-door and four-door (Jeep Wrangler Unlimited) models.

"The Jeep brand’s partnership with Activision allows us to combine our new, more powerful, more exciting and more fuel-efficient Jeep Wrangler with the latest version of one of the most popular gaming experiences in the world,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. "This opportunity enables us to demonstrate Jeep Wrangler’s unique combination of fun, capability and performance to a broad and growing group of consumers.”

The presence of a Jeep Wrangler in the game is a natural fit, including an in-game integration into the epic single-player storyline of “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3,” a Spec-Ops level and the title’s much anticipated multiplayer experience.

“We are very excited to extend our partnership with Jeep, which not only marries two of the world’s most iconic brands – Jeep Wrangler and Call of Duty – but also creates a number of unique consumer touch points,” said Tim Ellis, Chief Marketing Officer for Activision. “The Jeep Wrangler perfectly embodies the authenticity and dynamic energy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and our teams have worked hard to create an integrated partnership that enhances both brands.”

The vehicle also features a unique “power-dome” hood, along with such Mopar® accessories as a winch-ready front bumper, rear bumper, rock rails, taillamp guards and a fuel-filler door. Inspired by the most recent version of Activision’s popular “Call of Duty” games, the new limited-edition Wrangler delivers legendary Jeep capability, aggressive 32-inch off-road tires, live axles with locking differentials in the front and rear, and a two-speed transfer case.

Available dealer-installed Mopar performance parts include a Warn winch, 2-inch lift kit and classic five-spoke wheels.

The 2012 Jeep Wrangler

Jeep Wrangler – the most capable and recognized vehicle in the world – becomes even more capable both on- and off-road for 2012, courtesy of an all-new, more fuel efficient and more powerful 3.6-liter V-6 engine, and a new five-speed automatic transmission – both of which it shares with the award-winning Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Chrysler Group’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine – winner of the prestigious Ward’s 10 Best Engines award – delivers 285 horsepower (209 kW) and 260 (353 N•m) lb.-ft. of torque, while delivering up to 21 miles per gallon highway in the 2012 Jeep Wrangler. The improvement, when compared to the previous 3.8-liter V-6 engine, is 40 percent in horsepower and 10 percent in torque.

Additionally, for refined shifting and greater performance, the Jeep Wrangler migrates from a four-speed to a new five-speed automatic transmission. The 2012 Jeep Wrangler also features the company’s first application of a manual transmission to the Pentastar V-6.

Jeep continues to refine the successful Wrangler formula by combining legendary, benchmark capability with an interior that delivers rich styling with significantly upgraded touch surfaces, occupant comfort and versatility, and a premium appearance courtesy of a body color hard top for the popular Sahara and Rubicon models.

2012 Jeep Wrangler interior highlights include a recently redesigned instrument panel and storage areas with improved ergonomics and upgraded materials. A lockable console and upgraded door armrest areas boast comfortable touch points, while a redesigned center stack is easier to reach and operate. Heated, power mirrors are available, and drivers and passengers enjoy enhanced visibility courtesy of large rear windows.
